#PlayLikeAGirl

On the 18th-19th June, a team of female organists will be teaming up to perform the Complete Organ Works of J S Bach over the course of 24 hours.

The event is raising money to bring a group of Zambian music leaders over to England for two weeks of workshops in Choral Conducting, Choral Singing, and Organ Tuning. This project is a continuation of Pembroke College Choir's ongoing link with musicians in Zambia following their Choir Tour in 2017. The event also aims to increase the visibility of female organists whilst exploring the fascinating variety of Bach’s writing for the organ. Concert Organist Dame Gillian Weir DBE is the Patron of the event, and will be in attendance throughout.

The Bach marathon will take place from noon to noon on the 18th-19th June 2018. It is designed to showcase a wide range of ages and abilities, bringing together local school-children with Organ Scholars and Directors of Music from across the University, as well as professional concert organists from further afield. The event will start with a recital given by Anna Lapwood, Director of Music at Pembroke College, who was the first female organ scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford, and is the youngest Oxbridge Director of Music. It will end with a recital given by Rachel Mahon, a Canadian organist who was the first female organ scholar of St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Get Involved

We want as many people as possible to be able to be involved. If you can't come to Cambridge, the entire event will be live-streamed on Facebook (facebook.com/pembrokechoir) so you can follow the progress online.

We're also encouraging musicians everywhere to post a video of them playing (Bach or anything else!), with the hashtag #PlayLikeAGirl to help spread the word.
